As soon as I heard this album I had to hit up my patnas and tell them WTF was up..Lupe dropped a heat rock with this album. Easily in his top three discography if not in the top ranked albums of the last half decade. This album is filled with the trifecta, beats, rhymes & life word to tribe.
I mean..this guy, this guy Wasalu, this guy drops two classic joints (Food & Liquor, and The Cool) then proceeds to nearly commit career suicide with his social media antics and real world antics (Calls Obama & the USA the biggest terrorists, posted a pic in a KKK outfit and gets in twitter beef with Gangsta Gibbs..wtf was he thinking?) and he drops two coiled dooky ropes (and not shiny ones) he calls albums in succession (aight I’m beaming was my joint for a hot minute) I almost lost hope in this black samurai.
Then I hear whispers that the ex golden child, who used to hold Kendrick Lamar’s current spot, dropped an album. I was like, “Oh..word. Let me peep this shit for a hot second.” I popped that shit in heard Summer and I was like “Oh this bout to be some artsy shit..I’m digging it though.” then, THEN Mufuckin Mural came on and my head snapped up like I caught some unlabeled solution in my eye during chemistry lab. “WTF is this?!” I said to myself..bars, bars, Bars, BArs, BARs, BARS, BAAAAARS! Lu spews a high nigga’s inner monologue all over the track! Unstoppable train of thought all over that mutha!
I prefer girls to reign all over the world
And not rain like, rain man or rain like rain dance
Or rain like a slight chance of rain when it’s raining
Or rein like deer slaves to Santa Claus sleigh man
But reign like Queens that reign over made man
And not Queen like Queen killer, rhapsody bohemian Queen
But Queen like white glove wave hand
And not wave hand like it’s a heat wave
So you make a fan by waving your hand
I’m talking wave like you saying “hey”
After that hookless bar fest I was in. No more needed to be said. The rest of the album did not disappoint. The beats are tailored to Lu’s style and content. Th interludes are wonderful and add to the album asthetics. The seasonal theme is a great idea which I plan on revisiting in each real-world season. Too bad the album ends with Spring. This album and Flying Lotus’ ‘You’re Dead’ or Black Milk’s ‘If There Is A Hell Below’ go well together.
I recommend this project and I suspect it will become an album you revisit throughout your life. I fear the topics touched on this album will still be hot issues throughout the remainder of my life. But not since The Cool has Lu found an entertaining, reflective and timeless way to talk about the burdens on his heart.
